John F. Faber, PhD, LSW HIV
Prevention Research Specialist

Dr. Faber is one of four founding members of the Pennsylvania Prevention Project and has had the privilege of working with PA CPG and DOH members since the first community-planning meeting in May 1994. From that time through 1996 Dr. Faber coordinated all and facilitated most of the 96 focus groups for the initial statewide needs assessment. In 1995 he designed the Pennsylvania Young Adult Roundtables, which, under his direction between 1995 and 2005, has become the national “gold standard” for youth participation in HIV prevention community planning. Between 1999 and 2003 he was the project officer for a unique demonstration project that integrated theater and HIV prevention for young people. From 1999 to the present Dr. Faber has been the project coordinator for “Decisions For Life,” a group level HIV risk reduction intervention that was designed using key principles of HIV prevention community planning by and for sexually-active young people (ages 13-24). He founded his roles at the Pitt Men’s Study as crisis intervention counselor and group facilitator. Dr. Faber is a proud New Yorker, where he received a BA (Education) from Brooklyn College and an MS Ed from Fordham University. A Pittsburgher since 1993, he received an MSW and a PhD (Social Work) from the University of Pittsburgh.
